WVSU and MATRIC Form Shared Research-Lab Partnership

StateMints (West Virginia State University)
March 26 2006

West Virginia State University (WVSU), and Mid-Atlantic Technology Research and Innovation Center (MATRIC) of Charleston, WV signed a partnership agreement in December 2005 that will allow for the sharing of research laboratories on both institutional premises.

MATRIC, an independent, non-profit corporation, partners with higher education, industry, and government to conduct research in areas of chemistry, chemical products, biosystems, and software systems, as well as commercialize the resulting products and services. Presently, MATRIC leases laboratory spaces in the Dow Technology Park, in South Charleston, WV, which are available for various chemical, biomass, electronic, and combustion research projects.

WVSU has 14 laboratory spaces on campus, which are being used to capacity by eleven research scientists. Though they have excess laboratory equipment, there is a need for additional laboratory space.

This agreement will enhance the primary mission of both institutions. As part of their joint efforts, they will carry out independent or sponsored research projects requiring the use of specialized laboratories and equipment; conduct classes and perform experiments in laboratory science methods and processes; and participate in joint product and process development efforts.

Dr. R. Charles Byers, vice president for Planning and Advancement, and Mr. Keith A. Pauley, president and CEO for MATRIC, signed the agreement.
