Gov. Joe Manchin has repeated his support for the Mid-Atlantic Technology Research and Innovation Center, also known as MATRIC - the outfit at the South Charleston Technology Park that hopes to employ many of the 150 researchers The Dow Chemical Co. will let go over the next two years.
"We're committed to building off the intellect we have," Manchin said Wednesday. "You don't get many of these opportunities to keep the best and brightest."
"My commitment is, I'm putting an additional $2 million in the state budget for MATRIC," Manchin said.
In addition to Manchin's commitment of state money:
- The Kanawha County Commission agreed last week to give MATRIC $500,000.
- MATRIC is asking the city of South Charleston "for some significant support, in the same order of magnitude as the county," said Keith Pauley, MATRIC's president and chief executive officer.
- MATRIC is working with the Charleston Area Alliance "on various scenarios that would extend or change the terms of the agreement" under which MATRIC has a $500,000 line of credit from the Alliance, Pauley said.
