MATRIC Annual Meeting

MATRIC will hold its annual meeting reception at The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 10, 2007. We encourage our supporters and friends from the community to attend and help celebrate the end of MATRIC's third and most successful year. Our staff and many of our clients will be on hand to highlight some of our project work. Over two hundred invited guests including Governor Joe Manchin will be on hand to celebrate recent research and development success at MATRIC and to learn about opportunities for regional economic growth through technology creation and commercialization.

MATRIC Honors Outgoing Board Chair

In every community there are dedicated individuals who selflessly give of their time and talents to benefit the community as a whole. MATRIC's Outgoing Board Chair Thomas E. Potter is a stellar example of such an exemplary citizen. In addition to his active role as leader of the business Law Department at the Charleston law firm of Jackson Kelly, Potter served as Chair for numerous local community organizations including the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Renaissance Corporation, the Business and Industrial Development Corporation (BIDCO), the National Institute for Chemical Studies, Capital Market, Inc., Advantage Valley, Inc., Charleston Rotary Club and the YMCA, and, most recently, the Mid- Atlantic Technology, Research and Innovation Center.

Potter is a former member of the West Virginia University Board of Governors and is a member of the Boards of the West Virginia University Foundation, Center of the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia (the "Clay Center"), the Snowshoe Institute, Charleston Area Medical Center, National Advisory Council Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center-West Virginia University, and the West Virginia KIDS COUNT Fund.

In recognition of his service to the community, Potter received the Spirit of the Valley Award for leadership and volunteer work in the Kanawha Valley; was awarded the Order of Vandalia, West Virginia University's highest award; and was inducted to Marshall University's Business Hall of Fame.

As Chairman of BIDCO from 2001 to 2004, Potter was instrumental in developing the concept of an entity that could potentially replace those research and technical jobs lost in the merger between the Union Carbide Corporation and the Dow Chemical Company, and the subsequent downsizing of the chemical industry as a whole in the Kanawha Valley. Because of his commitment, leadership and guidance, MATRIC has successfully increased our cumulative contract base to over $14.6M and now employs over 70 full and part- time staff, greatly exceeding expectations for its first three years and well on the way to becoming that entity envisioned. Thankfully, MATRIC will have access to Mr. Potter's considerable talents as he continues to serve as a MATRIC Board member. We at MATRIC are extremely grateful and proud to be associated with such a visionary leader.

Salute to The Dow Chemical Company

MATRIC's board and staff would like to extend a sincere thank you for the support of the Dow Chemical Company during MATRIC's first three years. Without their support it would have been impossible for MATRIC to have grown at the rate it has. The Dow Chemical Company has provided significant contributions in donated space and laboratory equipment as well as cash donations. Please join us in applauding this committed corporate citizen for their contributions to economic development in the Charleston area.

BQ-9000 Accreditation

With MATRIC's increasing business related to biodiesel manufacturing, we now offer the services of two staff members to conduct BQ-9000 audits through the National Biodiesel Board.

The main objective of the BQ-9000 program is to provide a mechanism to track biodiesel in the distribution system, identify biodiesel which meets industry standards and provide a means to reduce the probability of product reaching the marketplace which does not meet the industry standard, ASTM D6751.

Companies who produce, transport and/or distribute biodiesel fuel can receive accreditation by completing an application, submitting a Quality Manual and Warranty Info, providing proof of EPA registration and undergoing an initial audit to insure processes are in place to meet D6751. Subsequent surveillance audits are also required.

To access MATRIC's certified auditors, contact the National Biodisel Accreditation Program at www.bq-9000.org and request the services of Donald W. Booth or Donald C.Hamm.
