MATRIC CEO's Contract Renewed

The Board of Directors of MATRIC has completed negotiations on a new five-year contract with President and CEO Keith Pauley.

Board Chair Paul Arbogast stated: "Keith has provided exceptional leadership and far exceeded our growth expectations for the organization in its first three years. We are fortunate to have someone with his capabilities at the helm of MATRIC."

Before joining MATRIC, Pauley worked for the Titan Corporation managing the largest IV&V project in the world, NASA's critical software development for the International Space Station. He also worked for the United Space Alliance managing the hardware and software development for the Space Shuttle cockpit.

Pauley has been the recipient of numerous awards during his career, including the Oregon Stater Award for Early Career Achievement, from his alma mater, Oregon State University, where he obtained a Master's degree in nuclear engineering.

MATRIC Forms Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering (MATE)

MATRIC has formed Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering, PLLC (MATE), a professional engineering firm poised to provide services to a variety of chemical, energy, biofuels and aerospace customers.

MATE plans to secure significant professional engineering contracts in order to employ workers who have recently been notified of downsizing by the Dow Chemical Company and other local firms. MATE also offers interesting opportunities for engineers of all disciplines who may wish to return to West Virginia from other states.

With focused expertise in natural gas, coal, nuclear, biofuels, chemical and aerospace development, design, construction and start-up, MATE can already offer an experienced staff to support some of the most important industries in West Virginia and the surrounding region. Keith Pauley, President of MATRIC explains: "MATE complements MATRIC's research and development enterprise by providing the professional engineering services required for the detailed design and construction oversight needed for new process facilities. To date, MATRIC often has had to pass our research to out-of-state entities to complete the designs and to work with contractors."

Furthermore, Mr. Pauley explains that MATE has plans for rapid growth. "We plan to hire over 50 engineers and support staff in 2008 with the goal of becoming a major regional engineering firm within the next five years."

MATE is a for-profit corporation and will be co-located in MATRIC's offices at the Dow Technology Park, 3200 Kanawha Turnpike, Building 740 in South Charleston. Please send resumes and other expressions of employment interest by e-mail.

MATRIC Joins Homeland Security Consortium

MATRIC is a member of a newly formed System of Systems Security (SOSSEC) consortium, a group of industry, academic and government organizations, which is dedicated to improving the nation's ability to prevent, detect, mitigate, respond to and recover from manmade and natural Homeland disasters. SOSSEC draws upon the unique technological, programmatic, and organization capabilities of its partners in Industry and Academia.

Such an organization is needed to encourage a unity of effort on the part of local, state, Federal civil and military organizations. These entities represent many independent systems with idiosyncratic characteristics that must somehow play together including more than 48,000 municipalities, 1000 counties, 50 states and 20 government agencies. Collaboration and cooperation is needed horizontally, between geographically dispersed peer organizations and vertically, between local, state, regional, and federal organizations. Both horizontal and vertical dimensions are critical requirements needed to prepare for and respond to large-scale events. MATRIC's focus with the SOSSEC consortium centers on overcoming the information sharing challenges, including extracting actionable knowledge from this information.

MATRIC Tackles Environmental Issues in Tennessee

MATRIC scientists in Tennessee have been writing a Remedial Design Report/Remedial Action Work Plan (RDR/RAWP) addressing soil and sediment characterization and remedial actions set forth in the Record of Decision (ROD) for Interim Remedial Actions in Bethel Valley. Bethel Valley is a 1734-acre area defined within the Oak Ridge National Laboratory at the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). The ORR encompasses 34,516-acres and hosts three major industrial research and production facilities originally constructed as part of the World War II-era Manhattan Project, East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP, formerly the K-25 Site), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (formerly X-10), and the Y-12 National Security Complex.

Soils in portions of Bethel Valley have become contaminated by laboratory related chemicals and radionuclides through a number of release mechanisms (chemical spills, leaking lines, landfills, pits and sumps below buildings, basins, and burn pits) and pose two problems. The first problem is contaminated soils, which pose a potential risk to the health of workers who might come into contact with them. The second concern is that the contaminated soils may be sources of contamination to groundwater. To solve these problems, remedial actions have been evaluated, selected and documented in the Bethel Valley ROD.

The RDR/RAWP being prepared by MATRIC presents a conceptual design approach for implementing soils and sediment remedial actions as identified by the Bethel Valley ROD. Remedial actions include capping at two of the large waste sites, soil removal actions to meet land use criteria, and removal of stream sediments along White Oak Creek. Additionally the approach includes sampling activities for site characterization and cleanup confirmation and discusses the decisions and communication necessary during characterization, implementation, and final site disposition.

Meet Our Staff

B. F. "Cap" Smith recently joined MATE as Director of Engineering. Cap has had a long and distinguished career beginning as a project manager at Union Carbide's Taft Louisiana plant and progressing to Director of Engineering and Purchasing for Carbide's Agricultural Products Division. Cap continued his career as Director of Engineering for Rhone Poulenc Agricultural Products Group and most recently served as Chief of Administration & DEP Building Projects Director for the WV Division of Environmental Protection. Cap is a Registered Professional Engineer and holds degrees in Mathematics from the University of Charleston and Chemical Engineering from West Virginia University. Cap has managed over 600 capital projects worth over $1 billion dollars, and brings process, heat exchange, and distillation design expertise to MATE.
