Thanksgiving - A Time of Reflection

The words below, written by MATRIC CEO Keith Pauley in August 2006, have indeed proven to be visionary:

When MATRIC set a goal to be a recognized international leader in research and development just thirty months ago, we had no idea that it would happen so soon. In the last year, MATRIC has conducted four significant projects for entities in Australia, the Middle East and Mexico.

It is impossible to guess where MATRIC staff will be traveling in the future. However, it probably will be on another continent.

As we at MATRIC reflect on our journey, we are truly thankful for the many supporters that have contributed to our growth and helped us fulfill our mission of creating life changing research and development and good jobs for the region.

Let's collectively count some of our blessings:

  • On December 1, MATRIC will hit the milestone of employing its 100th person.

  • MATRIC is bringing work to the US from Europe and Asia. Efforts are presently underway in China, Europe, the Middle East and Russia to provide scientific and engineering expertise.

  • MATRIC Chief Engineer Dr. George Keller was recently named one of the top 100 engineers of the 20th century by the American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE).

  • Several of MATRIC's intellectual discoveries have been successfully validated and transferred to for-profit start-ups which have received at least one round of investor funding and are well on their way to contributing jobs and revenue to the community.

  • Despite the economic turndown, MATRIC is looking forward to a banner year in 2009.

MATE Partners to Form International Design Center

Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering (MATE) is pleased to announce the formation of the International Design Center (IDC), located in South Charleston, WV. Beginning December 1, the IDC will employ approximately 60 staff and anticipates adding an additional 90 positions in the next twelve months.

The IDC is a strategic alliance between MATE and Butler to develop a world-class engineering design organization to service the needs of local, regional, national and international customers. IDC will be headquartered in the Dow Technology Park, South Charleston, WV, and will house both engineering and design/drafting staff. The IDC provides for total life- cycle engineering services in the following areas: Energy, Chemical Manufacturing, Water Treatment, Biofuels, and Aerospace.

The IDC combines the strengths of MATE and Butler International to provide superior service and performance for our customers through the implementation of ISO9001 compliant procedures. MATE's cadre of highly experienced professional engineers, cutting-edge software tools and reach-back into the laboratories of MATRIC will help our customers solve the most significant engineering challenges. Butler International's world-wide technical and IT resources, trained designers and drafters, and state-of-the-art computer systems will be able to efficiently apply resources on even the largest projects. MATRIC to Lead Data Integration Center Project

On October 15, 2008, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R- W.Va., announced a $2M appropriation to start the Project National Shield Data Integration Center which will work to coordinate Homeland Security Data. The $2 million was included in the U.S. Department of Defense appropriation approved by Congress.

"It's an investment in our future. It plants a tree that will grow a forest," she said.

MATRIC will partner with members of the SSOSEC Consortium to establish the center.

MATRIC Annual Meeting

MATRIC held its annual meeting reception at The Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Over two hundred invited guests including Senator Jay Rockefeller, Representative Shelley Moore Capito, and State Commerce Secretary Kelley Goes were on hand to celebrate recent research and development success at MATRIC and to learn about opportunities for regional economic growth through technology creation and commercialization. Our staff and many of our clients were on hand to highlight some of our project work.

The following received MATRIC 2008 Star awards during the reception:

Don Bunning
The MATRIC 2008 Star Employee for C&ET Star is Don Bunning. Don has been a key contributor in the development and commercialization of biodiesel technology, which was started up in the BEST Energies plant in Wisconsin. Don spent many long hours at the plant during the startup and initial operating period. He has also been a leader in the development of upgrades to the initial design and in testing new concepts in the pilot plant. In addition, Don provides a valuable service as a mentor to new MATRIC employees. For his outstanding contributions and his dedication to excellence we honor Don Bunning as a Star Employee.

Adam Lucas
The MATRIC 2008 STAR EMPLOYEE for the Advanced Engineering Systems Business Area is Adam Lucas. Our tireless system administrator goes above and beyond in carrying out his responsibilities in MATRIC's fast growing environment. Adam has instituted a new corporate domain, an internal e-mail system and a client back-up capability. He has accomplished this by putting in many after-hour sessions to reduce the impact on his fellow MATRIC team members. Adam not only provides the support for MATRIC's internal corporate infrastructure, but has proven to be an invaluable resource to our research projects as well. For all of his hard work, we honor Adam Lucas as a STAR Employee.

Mark Nunley
The second MATRIC 2008 STAR EMPLOYEE for the Chemical and Environmental Technologies Business Area is Mark Nunley. Mark has led our process engineering team in design of a second biodiesel plant for our partner BEST Energies. Mark has also led the effort to develop next-generation technology, allowing the use of less expensive raw materials. Mark's hard work, many long hours, diligent effort, and project management skills have led to improvements in our design, keeping the MATRIC technology a world leader. For all of his hard work, we honor Mark Nunley as a Star Employee.

John Skaff
The MATRIC 2008 STAR Board Member is a man whose focus is on the business of business. As part of the original BIDCO team established to explore the opportunities created by the sudden downsizing of the chemical research community in the Kanawha Valley, he immediately saw the vision for establishing a world-class private sector research enterprise here in West Virginia. As the BIDCO group's ideas coalesced into what is now MATRIC, this community leader orchestrated our first technical project with a local chemical company. Since that time, he has served on MATRIC's Board of Directors, Executive Committee and has chaired MATRIC's commercialization arm, Mid-Atlantic Holdings, since its inception. With six new start-up companies and plans to create over 500 new manufacturing jobs locally over the next five years, Mid- Atlantic Holdings is the aggressive brain-child of this thought leader in our community. His business acumen and tireless energy have allowed MATRIC to grow at a rate few would have predicted. For all of his dedication to the organization and to the community of which it is a part, John Skaff is the MATRIC 2008 STAR Board Member.
