Location of the Technology Park Setting
The Technology Park is located within the city of South Charleston in Kanawha County, West Virginia. It is accessible from Interstate Highway 64 (one mile), and is approximately eight miles from Yeager Airport, serving the Charleston area. The site has a total area of 651 acres, of which 110 acres are available for development. Surroundings
West Virginia is part of the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland on the north, Virginia on the east and south, and Kentucky and Ohio on the west. The Charleston, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is located in the southwestern region of the state.
The Charleston MSA, consisting of Kanawha, Putnam, Lincoln, Boone and Clay counties, has a population of more than 300,000. Interstate Highways 64, 77, and 79 and Appalachian Corridor G merge within Charleston, providing convenient driving access in all directions. Within a 500 mile radius of Charleston are located 66% of the U.S. population and 30% of the population of Canada. South Charleston, West Virginia
South Charleston, a community with a population of approximately 13,000, was established in 1906 and incorporated in 1917. It was named South Charleston because it is located on the south side of the Kanawha River, opposite part of the city of Charleston. South Charleston was the site of rapid growth in the chemical industry in the years shortly after World War I. Several chemical companies joined other industries in the area, and Union Carbide moved in 1925 from its original location in Clendenin, WV to South Charleston. R&D and Engineering for the company were concentrated in South Charleston, and in 1949 the South Charleston Technical Center was opened to house these activities. Links
