South Charleston Technology Park
South Charleston Technology Park

Research Triangle Park

RTP is a planned research park created in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina in 1959.

It is currently the location for 112 research organizations that directly employ over 36,000 people.

Strategic Plan

Vision

The vision for the Technology Park is to serve as a thriving engineering, research and development center that will host multiple technical organizations and contribute to the economic growth of the region, modeled after the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.

A group of organizations contributed to the development of this vision, including:

BIDCO, the Business and Industry Development Council, now succeeded by the Charleston Area Alliance
The Chemical Alliance Zone
The Dow Chemical Company
The Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center (MATRIC)
The West Virginia Development Office (WVDO)
Elements of the Model

The model for the Technology Park has three critical elements:

A major research university with nationally renowned engineering and research capabilities to serve as an anchor. This will be a critical contribution to the credibility of the Technology Park. (A 58-acre segment of the park, including Building 740, has been donated to West Virginia University.)
A diverse collection of technically oriented businesses and companies. (Approximately 12 organizations are currently housed within the park.)
A nationally renowned contract research and development company. (Battelle, a contract research organization that conducts $3.3 billion in research and development annually, has joined the Technology Park.)
Development Plans

The plan for development includes the following elements that will contribute to long-term growth:

Continued support of Dow businesses
Multiple tenants focused on research and technology
Partnerships with universities, including West Virginia University, WVU Institute of Technology, Marshall University, University of Charleston, and West Virginia State Univesity
Support for economic growth and development for Dow, the state of West Virginia, and the greater region
