Technical Resources Introduction
Tenants at the Park have the opportunity to network and establish productive alliances with other technically focused organizations, which can provide training, business services, technical consulting and support, and commercialization assistance. Education and Academic Research
A number of the state's major universities have established a presence at the Technology Park. Classes are offered on site by West Virginia University, WVU Institute of Technology, West Virginia State University, and Marshall University. The Marshall University Graduate College also offers many classes at its South Charleston campus, adjacent to the Technology Park. West Virginia State University has opened five research laboratories to date in Building 740. These facilities are devoted to research in genomics, plant genetics, applied microbiology, and biochemistry. Non-Profit Technical Organizations
The Battelle Memorial Institute has begun operations at the South Charleston Technology Park to conduct its own research and work with companies already in the region to promote research. Battelle, a non-profit corporation based in Columbus, Ohio, specializes in developing new technology and getting it into the market. Battelle has a $3 billion annual budget and more than 19,000 employees in more than 100 offices worldwide. Its researchers developed the copying process that led to the formation of Xerox in 1959. Battelle researchers also worked to develop cruise control in cars, food for astronauts, and compact discs. Battelle has close ties with the U.S. Department of Energy. The institute has partnered with several universities to run national laboratories, including the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Chemical Alliance Zone Biotechnology and Allied Sciences Incubation Center (CAZBASIC) offers incubation facilities for technology-based entrepreneurs and businesses. It can provide versatile laboratory/office space in Building 740 and a full range of start-up business services. The Chemical Alliance Zone, Inc is a non-profit group of citizens, labor leaders, educators, government officials, chemical executives and business leaders committed to maintaining and expanding the presence of the chemical industry in the West Virginia counties of Cabell, Kanawha, Putnam and Wayne. The Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center (MATRIC) is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation headquartered at the South Charleston Technology Park. MATRIC offers contract R&D services to a variety of clients, ranging from small industrial companies to large government agencies. MATRIC offers a range of technical expertise and can take on or assist with projects ranging from basic research to commercial demonstration. The mission of MATRIC is to create high-quality, life-changing science and technology and develop spin-off businesses that will bring technology advances to the market. From hiring its first employee in 2004, MATRIC has now grown to more than 60 employees working on projects in chemical and environmental technologies, life sciences, and advanced engineering systems. |
